I saw this man today in Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX) from the other side of the street from where I was walking. I made the decision to cross over and talk to him. I couldn't understand a lot of what he said, but I did learn he had joined the Army during the Viet Nam war but never had to go over. I asked if I could take his picture and he said sure, and took his hands and began straightening his hair and beard, and asked me "how is that?" and then smiled. I asked where he stayed when he wasn't sitting on the sidewalk, and he told me he has lived under one of the bridges for 10 years. I then asked, if he didn't mind, how he had come to be in that situation, and he shook his head and said it wasn't something I could print. I told him I wasn't a reporter, but that he didn't have to tell me. I gave him $10, about half of what I had - my gas money. He said thank you and God Bless you.

Thank you for sharing both the photo and the story. It took some guts to walk over to him and engage in a conversation. In a split second he decided to confide in you, meaning you're trustworthy!

thank you so much. I like to go down to Deep Ellum to see and photograph the murals. I am not typically a people photographer. Everyone has a story.
