A minimal take on the broken pier at Arrieta, Lanzarote. Shot for a forthcoming update to the Photographing Lanzarote eBook (see www.globalphotoguides.co for more info).
The pier was damaged by a shup during a storm some years ago, knocking out a section of the walkway and leaving the concrete foundation and attached pillars an orphan out in the sea.
Since then, the pier has become a point of interest for visiting photographers. In this shot I used a 10-stop ND filter to allow a long exposure to still the waters - no mean feat considering the bay is also popular with surfers!
I always had a black and white image in mind for this shot, as I wanted it to feel a little spooky. Thankfully this was one of those shots where the reality works out to match the vision I had when taking it.
