Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. An area of deep deposits of volcanic tuff - volcanic ash, compressed and partially welded. It is softer than sandstone, so erodes easily along cracks in the formation; this often leaves pyramidal forms or tall towers-columns-hoodoos. The tallest ones are protected by a caprock of hard basalt.
