Most times the metaphor is that heaven is up and that the light is there. For me this photo is extra interesting because the light is down the stairs, which contradicts the expectation. I also chose to focus on the handle in the dark instead of the people stepping into the light. To really focus on the fact that 'you' the person looking at the photograph is not yet there. Then it gets even more interesting since you can see another staircase going further down....
