The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will undergo a $13 million renovation that will include replacing the grid on the 1960s-era crossing’s lift span.
In addition to the grid deck replacement, the yearlong project includes replacing the parking areas at each end of the lift span; replacing the existing median barrier with a taller barrier; overlaying the concrete bridge deck; repairing steel and concrete worn by age or corrosion; cleaning and painting structural steel; cleaning and performing maintenance of lift span machinery; and replacing the elevators in the lift span towers and rehabilitating the bridge control house, said Lloyd Royal Jr., division contract engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation’s division that includes the Wilmington region.
Royal said the bridge has been “sitting in the elements and from time to time it needs to go through an overhaul.”
