Hoffman Square, the story of hope.
Hoffman Square, originally known as Church and Market Square, in Bloemfontein was laid out in 1853. It was later renamed after the first President of the Orange Free State, Josias Hoffman. The square has gone through many faces over the decades but its main purpose as transportation node has remained constant and is now in its rejuvenation phase and part of a total redesign of the inner CBD. Only the monument of the fallen soldiers in First and Second World War was kept after the 1970’s redesign and will be the only part left over in the rejuvenation.
These photos capture the everyday life and happenings on the square, reflecting the scars of time on the square but more so on its people, the street merchant trying to make a living from passers-by, the day labourer waiting to be collected for a piece job, the street children mixed up in gangs calling the square their home. The scars are everywhere, burnt walls, tiles falling off, and graffiti, on the faces of the people of Hoffman Square showing the harshness of life. But in it all one small boy still portrays joy and hope – capturing the dream of a nation.
