Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken on assignment at the grounds of the North-West University, South Africa. The concrete ramps are part of the circulation at the Sanlam Auditorium, designed by and old Architecture Professor of mine.Time
It was around 6 pm on Thursday on the 3rd of September, in our Spring time. There was a storm brewing outside and lent to wonderful moody light in the interior spaces and dark view to the outside. It was perfect for black and white photography.Lighting
As previously mentioned, it was an overcast evening with a storm brewing outside. I had two light sources, the natural light from the window above and from behind me and then artificial low lighting almost level with the floor to light up the walkway. I set up the camera on a low angle and on f/8 aperture with a medium exposure (3.2 sec) and low ISO 100. The light sources and settings allowed for the capture of the textures on the concrete as well as to heighten the moody effect of the storm outside and add depth and contrast to the photo.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS 700D on a tripod set up low and angled up towards the window to capture the perspective. No flash was used for the shot and a shutter release cable was used. I used the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-6.5 IS IIInspiration
I was on assignment to photograph the auditorium and was busy walking around looking for workable angles and views. I came to a halt at this position when I saw the all the lines leading in to a strong composition. Framing the window and also giving a sense of movement and depth in the photo. My girlfriend and I immediately agreed that it will be perfect spot to take a couple of photos.Editing
The photo was cropped in a bit so that the bottom corridor lighting would not distract from the essence of the photo. Furthermore the white balance was adjusted to give a crisper black and white effect,In my camera bag
I usually carry my Canon EOS 700D with four lenses, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-6.5 IS II, Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 III, Canon EF-S 24mm STM Pancake and the new nifty fifty Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Alongside these I take along a Pixel Mago flash and shutter release cable as well as shutter release remote.Feedback
Really go out to explore your surroundings, it's easier to capture something that one is passionate about but look for that special something, that angle or detail view that really stands out. Sometimes a small element has a lot more impact. Remember the basics of photography, look at the composition of the photograph and elements that can be used to make it stronger like in this example the strong lines leading one's eye and also giving the perception of depth whilst framing the top window. Also use textures to add some feeling to a photo.
