Jane was in horrendous pain from a rare cancer. The hospice doctors said she had perhaps a week to ten days to live, and they asked her if she wanted to be in pain or completely sedated. She chose sedation and I thought I would not be able to communicate with her. The nurses said she could still hear me. I took her hand in mine and as I reminisced through our life I would ask her squeeze my hand as I talked. She did and that continued until she didn't respond, but the nurses said she could still hear me.
