Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Robinson Nature Center, in Columbia, Maryland. The Center has several butterfly gardens.

Time

It was a hot July morning when I took this photo.

Lighting

I think the less harsh morning light was a benefit.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7100, and a Nikon 200 mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

Butterflies are challenging to photograph because they can light momentarily on a host plant then fly off leaving you chasing after them.

Editing

I cropped the photo using the rule of thirds then flipped it horizontally so the eye, travelling right to left, would see the butterfly first.

In my camera bag

I pack my Nikon 850 and a Nikon 200-500 mm lens as well as the Nikon 80-400 lens. A macro or wide angle lens might come along too.

Feedback

Be patient. Use a high shutter speed to capture detail. The shutter speed for this photo was 1/5000.
