“Then know this. I can neither take life nor can I restore it, but I can grant your wish, exactly as it was made. You only have to say – and be utterly certain in your *soul* that it is your true desire.” He chuckled suddenly... “My, I cannot recall the last time I used that world, soul.
"This trick, this misdirection... I can't promise you what it will buy... Death may not be very bright, but he's not stupid either – all the cards have to go back in the deck, or he will notice. But if you and I, between us, subtly mark a card... that should slip by. Just.”
-- Sleight Of Hand, a short story by Peter S. Beagle
The short story Sleight of Hand by Peter S. Beagle is one of my very favorites of his works. It's an extremely beautiful, moving work; magical, mysterious, dark at times, but full of love and hope.
There's not much I can say about it in detail without giving away major plot points, so I will simply say please pick up a copy of your own and immerse yourself in the wonder that Peter Beagle creates! -- http://www.conlanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=SL-TR
My wonderful neighbor John Harnagel posed for this image at my request. John is a very creative and talented man who has done a TON of acting both on stage and screen. I loved being able to use such a good friend to bring this photograph to life! It makes it even more special and personal. Thank you, John!
