The Sutro Baths were opened to the public in 1896 as the largest indoor swimming area in the world but now lay in ruins as part of the Golden Gate Recreation Center. There were 6 salt water pools and one fresh water pool. The saltwater pools were filled by the ocean at high tide, it was an amazing feat of engineering. It fell into disuse and was burned in an arson fire in 1966.
