During a trip to Iceland in March 2018, I took a Northern Lights tour where we were giving tips on spotting the aurora borealis as well as how to photograph it. I'm glad I went on the tour, because I wouldn't have known what to look for otherwise - the guides explained that sometimes the Northern Lights only appear as wispy gray clouds, and that in those cases, a DSLR camera lens is the only thing powerful enough to capture the color.
