Summer sunsets at Mono Lake can be mind-blowing. With the monsoons the drive-up access and the well known nature of the lake comes combat photography conditions. On nights like this, visitors swarm through the Tufa, taking it all in. In general they respect the fragile nature of the landscape, treading carefully as they explore this foreign scene, taken by the foreignness of it all. The Tufa make for interesting subjects, all the more so in the contradiction. As we seek to photograph something so wild and indicative of geologic history, we should also bear in mind that these features were under water not so many years ago, before the inflows to Mono Lake became diverted for the growing water needs of Los Angeles.
