Dating from around 3500 BC, Pentre Ifan (Ivan's Village) stands on slopes north of the Preseli Mountains in North Pembrokeshire overlooking the Nevern Valley. The huge capstone, 5m long, 2.4m wide and 0.9m thick is estimated to weigh 16 tonnes and rests on the tips of just three of the six upright stones. Although traditionally identified as a communal burial chamber, no evidence of burial has ever been found here. An alternate theory suggests that what we see today is the monument as it was intended to be seen, perhaps as a more elaborate version of a standing stone or maybe to demonstrate the status and skill of its builders.
