Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Fairy Glen on the River Conwy near Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia, Wales.

Time

I had been shooting near the mountain Tryfan earlier in the day but as it became overcast I decided to head here. As the location is a steep river gorge with overhanging trees it is possible to get a good shot here at almost any time of day in any weather conditions.

Lighting

It was fairly overcast by this time but the ambient light alone was enough to illuminate parts of the gorge through the trees.

Equipment

The photo was taken on a tripod with my Canon 1300D and a wide angle lens (Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6). I used a 1000ND filter to capture as long an exposure as I could for a blurred water effect. My camera settings were f22, ISO100, 15mm with a 86 second exposure.

Inspiration

I had been to this location many years ago before I got into photography so I knew that it had a lot of potential, especially in autumn. I was lucky enough to visit the gorge at a time after several days of heavy rainfall, so the river was very full. I was able to scramble out to a rock in the middle of river to get a central position facing upstream.

Editing

I have made some edits to the photo by boosting the contrast and colour saturation, adding some glow and a high pass filter to increase sharpness in some areas. I also added a vignette to help frame the composition.

In my camera bag

I always carry 3 lenses in my bag as I'm often visiting new locations and don't necessarily know in advance what I'll need. My favourite lens is the wide angle (Canon EF-S 10-18mm). I also have a telephoto (Canon EF 75-300mm - which is great for picking out smaller compositions within the larger landscape) and a Canon EF-S 18-55mm. I always take my tripod and shutter release cable and a bunch of different Hoya ND filters for long exposures.

Feedback

It's a great location to photograph at any time of year but particularly good in Autumn to capture the colours of the changing trees. The area around the river is quite rocky and slippery so good footwear is advisable.
