(Asio flammeus) Medium sized owls with mottled brown bodies, pale under-wings and yellow eyes. In winter many continental birds come from Scandinavia, Russia, and Iceland to the UK, especially around the coast. They are of European conservation concern and so are an Amber List species. This one was photographed in a sanctuary in Europe as many birds are hunted and shot, despite the laws of the country which forbid it.
