Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken on the beach at Old Hunstanton in Norfolk, UK.

Time

It was taken just before midday on Christmas Day.

Lighting

It was a bright and sunny day - the lighting was such that it can sometimes burn out the highlights. Fortunately the dogs were lit from their left hand side.

Equipment

The camera was: Canon EOS 5D Mark III The lens was: Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Hand held.

Inspiration

My wife and I were out for a walk before returning to our hotel for Christmas lunch. On good days the beach is a hive of activity even in Winter, with birds, kite surfers and dog walkers. These two dogs caught our attention because they, and their owners, were clearly having so much fun. The owner threw the ball into the sea and the dogs raced each other to collect. It was a picture of sheer joy just to watch, so a photograph was an inevitable cosequence of watching them.

Editing

The original image is RAW. Initially the image was cropped and then there was a little basic processing of clarity and vibrance followed by a small amount of sharpening, before conversion to JPEG. Levels were then checked and some noise removed using Topaz Denoise, and finally it was resized so that our very slow internet could handle the upload of the image. All was carried out using Serif Affinity Photo.

In my camera bag

On such occasions I would only carry the camera and lens. On other occasions I would have a short zoom (24-105mm) available and also, maybe a 150-600mm zoom. I would also carry some close-up filter attachments in case I was able to do any macro work.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open for what is happening around the area and head for where the action seems to be. Then wait for the opportunity to get a good picture.
