Cerbalus aravaensis, a huntsman spider found in the southern Arava Valley of Israel and Jordan and the largest spider of the Sparassidae family in the Middle East. The species was officially discovered by scientists in 2003 and a joint Israeli-Jordanian scientific team surveyed and studied them on both sides of the border. First articles about the Cerbalus aravensis were published in 2007 and ensuing ones followed in 2010 as a result of ambitions to renew sand mining in the Samar dunes region in which the species is endemic to, thus endangering the very limited habitat of the spider.
