We flew in a de Havilland Beaver floatplane from Homer to a small pond in the northern part of the Katmai Preserve. Shortly after leaving the plane and hiking out on one of the century old bear paths, we noticed a brown bear approaching from behind us. Our guide had us gather together and we watched as she passed between us and our pilot as if we didn’t exist. We could have been rock or bushes as far as she was concerned. She walked over to the upper river bank to look for a good fishing spot. She eventually sat down, scratched a few itches then casually looked over at us.
