1800's locks - the eighth wonder of the world
The channel issue had never died and shortly before Gustav III's death several attempts had been made to implement the plans for a channel past the fall. It was under the patronage of Duke Karl that the matter was raised again when he took the fourteen-year-old Gustav IV Adolf to Trollhättan.
Proposals were made for the channel construction. The proposal that was adopted had been drawn up by utility patron Peter Bagge and director W Chalmers in Gothenburg. Together with von Platen, they promised to complete the building in six years and succeeded. In 1800, the first lock trail was completed in Trollhättan.
Outside the world, this was regarded as the world's eighth wonder. It attracted many curious to combine utility with pleasure, by studying technology at a romantic location.
