08:00 AM GMT: I have captured the sunrise by the sacred megaliths of Avebury and am now moving on. A three-mile walk to the east has taken me to where my rendezvous with the red kites will render a verdict on how well Canon labs have calibrated my camera and lenses. For their sake, I hope they have done a job because after paying the money they charged me, the slightest softness would warrant nothing less than an earful.

The ubiquitous scavengers havenโ€™t disappointed me this time. In fact, today I am getting the impression they enjoy my presence, as they flap their 2-metre wings, twist, turn, pause, flash their striking plumage, then continue to glide with elegance along the air thermals. More than thirty years of re-introduction and conservation programs in succession have come to fruition: back in the 80s, sightings of such creatures would have rocked the news world more than Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947 did. Now, there are more than 3,000 breeding pairs (possibly more) in the British skies, giving the RSPB a peace of mind; giving me a reference point for my 30.4 Megapixel sensor and lens focus speed.

Thanks, Mark! This is not really my type of shooting, but I have spotted some of these birds in a few places and I thought I'd give it a try. They do ot really fly at speed, but stop and freeze, as if they want you to take a photo of them.
