I found this male Northern Cardinal at Black Point Wildlife Drive in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Northern Cardinals seem very watchful and fly away quickly. This particular guy was also not hiding as deep in the bushes as most of them seem to like to do. The brilliant red of a male Northern Cardinal calls attention to itself when males are around. Away from backyards, cardinals are still common but inconspicuous owing to their affinity for dense tangles. Listen for their piercing chip notes to find where they are hiding.
