In early May, my friend, Debb Walker, and I met up at the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive in Apopka, Florida to take some wildlife photos. Debb and I have known each other for several years and are well matched for our photography adventures. We both shoot with Nikons, love to explore the amazing Florida landscape and will patiently wait for each other to capture the perfect shot!
We just happened to plan our trip on the 4th anniversary of the opening of the park, so a big event was planned. Volunteers from a local Audubon chapter were stationed around the drive to give visitors tips and information, and it was great that we had the opportunity to chat with and learn from other passionate wildlife photographers.
The 30,800-acre Lake Apopka and the 20,009-acre North Shore Area are in the headwaters of the Ocklawaha River. There are 5 ways to access the Lake Apopka Loop Trail, which covers more than 20 miles. Four of the accesses are for hiking and biking, while the 5th gives you access for cars. The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is a one-way, 11-mile drive winding through the eastern portion of the property.
Debb and I planned well and entered the wildlife drive as the sun rose. It is one of the top three birding areas for the entire state (includes Everglades National Park and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge). Froom the very beginning, we were able to capture landscape photos with a golden sunrise glow and beautiful skies. Within a few minutes, we were snapping photo after photo of birds who were actively hunting for a tasty breakfast, and the rest of the day followed with similar incredible photo opportunities.
