I don't know what it is - maybe the difference in climate, maybe the time of day - but it seemed to me that the big cats at the Memphis Zoo when I went there this past October were much more active than the same cats at the Houston Zoo. At the Houston Zoo you'd be lucky to see one of the lionesses this alert - most of the time they'd be napping, and often hidden away at the top of the mountain of boulders in their exhibit
