"Baby get to know music " by Maria411

One of the most rewarding and memorable times for a couple is when they’re expecting a baby to join their little family. As challenging as this phase of life is, it’s made easier thanks to the giddy excitement and anticipation of welcoming a tiny human to this world. That’s obviously something to remember for life, and what better way to document it than scheduling a professional photoshoot for the mother-to-be?

Maternity photoshoots have become quite commonplace these days. But a lot of people don’t really know how to start. In this guide, we’ll go over everything you need to know, from the timing to the various poses you can try.

When to Plan a Maternity Photoshoot

Ideally, you should hold the big day somewhere between 28 and 32 weeks. This is when the baby bump is at its most adorable point, allowing you to really showcase it in creative and fun ways. This is also when it’s still easy enough to sit in various ways without becoming uncomfortable. But don’t feel compelled to stick to this timeline. Plan your photoshoot when you feel comfortable and based on how you want the final images to look.

What Else to Keep in Mind

Once you’ve decided on the schedule, it’s crucial to start thinking of a few more things.

The Photographer

Pick a photographer if you want to get professional help. You may find some options on sites like Instagram or post an advertisement on other social platforms. A quick Google search will also give you a list of maternity photographers in your area. After shortlisting some people, make sure to view their previous work and see which one you feel most drawn to. Some aspects to consider are the themes, colors, lighting, and compositions that they use.

The Theme

Deciding the theme of your images is essential to get those dream-like results you see posted online. Do you want to keep it simple and have a nice shoot indoors or do you want to go all-out on the creative front? Check out some ideas and discuss with your photographer about what’s possible.

The Dress

Based on the theme, you must finalize what you’re going to wear. Everything from the material of your clothes to their color can change how the photographs turn out. Give this some thought and see if you need to buy some new outfits.

Types of Maternity Photoshoots

Generally speaking, a maternity photoshoot has four kinds:

  • Outdoor Shoots are great for featuring some beautiful nature in your images. These require a little more effort than indoor shoots but the results are worth it.
  • Studio Shoots are perfect for those mothers-to-be who value an intimate and private setting for their images.
  • Indoor Shoots offer better comfort than outdoor ones and can be done in various interesting locations.
  • Themed Shoots let you show off your creative or adventurous side, with fun getups and interesting props.

The kind of maternity photography you choose depends on many factors. The overall look and feel you wish to achieve, your level of comfort in different settings and poses, and the amount of effort you’re willing to put in are all things that will lead to your ultimate decision.

9 Outdoor Maternity Photography Ideas

Here you’ll find some of the best ideas for capturing the excitement of being pregnant in the great outdoors.

Surround yourself with Flowers

There’s perhaps no better way to showcase the beauty of pregnancy in the midst of soft and colorful flowers. Head to a location near you with lots of flowers and use them either as a backdrop or a frame by surrounding yourself with them. We promise that the results you get will be cherished forever!

Golden Hour is your Friend

For those breathtakingly stunning visuals in which the light seems like the star of the show, schedule your shoot during the golden hour. This is the time right before sunset when the sun gives off a brilliant golden light, leading to images that look straight out of a cinematic masterpiece.

Head to a Field

If you've got a lush green field nearby, that can be an excellent setting for your maternity photographs. Stand right in the middle of some tall plants to get the best results. You could match the color of your dress with the season's colors or go with a neutral white for an eye-catching contrast.

Embrace the City

Using the industrial rawness of a cityscape as your backdrop also leads to interesting images. You could stand in front of a textured wall to give your photoshoot a unique look and feel. Perhaps you might want to head to your favorite store or someplace that matters to you.

by annakazakova

Use the House

Speaking of places that matter to you, why not just use your front door as the backdrop? This could become a memory for a lifetime, even when you move away to a new abode.

Your First Date

We've got one more idea along the same lines: go to the place where you had your first date with the father. Whether in a restaurant or a park, taking your maternity photographs where you both started your life together is one of the best things you can do.

Stand in the Rain

Seeing it rain on your big day may seem like a disappointment to most, but you could use the weather to create stellar images. There's something magical about pictures taken with raindrops frozen all around you in the frame - just like giving birth to a human life is magical.

Show the Silhouette

One of the simplest and yet most striking maternity images can be created by going with a silhouette. Using the light and angles in the right way will let you take stunning shots highlighting the baby bump from a profile view.

Go Aerial

Taking photos from above is always a great idea for creative results. Sitting or lying down in a natural location like a botanical garden, for example, and capturing images from a higher perspective will lead to magical results.

9 Indoor Maternity Photography Ideas

If you’d like to stay home or have an indoor photoshoot, you can still get memorable results based on the following tips:

Bask in Natural Light

There’s no substitute for natural light. Even if you’re indoors, find a spot with good light. Sit next to a window or open a door to let the sun's rays enter your home. Try to use diffused light for those soft and pleasing results. You may also experiment with using the window as a backdrop if there’s a nice view. In that case, be sure to use a reflector to light your front.

Head to a Studio

For a professional photoshoot against static backdrops, go to a nearby studio. While taking great maternity shots at home is also possible, there’s a unique quality you can achieve at a studio thanks to professional lighting and various backdrops. Plus, your photographer will be able to guide your poses more easily.

Use Different Rooms

Capturing the beauty of pregnancy can be enhanced further if you do so in the important areas of your home. You could set up a photoshoot in various rooms like the bedroom and the nursery. This will add an even greater personal touch, immortalizing these beautiful days for the whole family.

Include the Family

Speaking of family, why not ask your baby’s siblings, if there are any, to join in? Having the family as part of your maternity photographs is a great idea as it reflects the excitement of the growing family.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

"Fall colors" by Giddeyupimages

If you can’t head outdoors, bring some nature inside the house. Invest in some plants to add a natural touch to your shots. Combine flowers and plants with natural light for a serene atmosphere.

Use Fabrics and Textures

Using some soft textured elements like blankets or a throw adds a cozy and intimate feel to your photos. It’ll also bring in another dimension and create more depth in the overall composition.

"IMG_7683" by denimwaltemath

Keep it Candid

Candid photos are arguably the best kind. Ask your partner to take pictures while you’re doing things you love. This may include reading a book, cooking some food, setting up the nursery, etc. The most incredible thing about candid photos is the natural look and feel, capturing the special time of your life without making it look forced.

Stay in Bed

Taking aerial shots while you lay in your bed is also a good idea. This can be combined with other tips like using a blanket or some fabrics for even more interesting results. Be sure to use plenty of pillows and neutral sheets to act as a natural backdrop.

Include Your Pets

If you’ve got pets in the house, adding them to the frame will make your photos look more personal. The love your furry friends give you is sure to enhance the scene. On top of that, these photos will serve as a reminder to your child later in life that their pets have been there with them forever.

20 Posing Tips for Maternity Photoshoot

No matter which setting you choose, it’s crucial to have a pose that works for you. There are many posing options, so always try a few and see which ones work best. Here are some favorites of ours you should try.

1. Classic Baby Bump Embrace

The timeless pose of cradling your baby bump never goes out of style. Gently place your hands on it and try different perspectives. Taking a photo directly from the front, focusing on the belly creates a beautiful, minimalist picture. You could also stand at an angle when shooting a wider frame.

2. Look Over the Shoulder

A candid and alluring shot can be achieved by looking over your shoulder directly into the camera lens. It’s a classic pose that captures the expectation of welcoming the baby into this world.
