Here is something we can learn from WAeagle about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.

1. WAeagle, where did you take this photo?

The photograph was taken in Perth City, Western Australia by the swan river.

2. What time of day?

Just after sunset had occurred.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

The sun set to the west so I setup the camera facing south to get the different coloration in the sky with deep colours from the sunset in the west and blue/greens to the east from the daytime sky

4. What equipment did you use?

Canon 70D with a tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens mounted on a Cullman tripod.

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

Having tried to capture the boat house on over a dozen previous attempts from different locations and different exposures I learnt from my mistakes and kept going back until conditions ticked all the boxes with a low wind allowing for a calm water surface and some cloud cover to be illuminated by the sunset while still holding the colours in the sky from a clear blue sky.

6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!

There was little post processing required as it was a long exposure that picked up the strong colours in the sky, a little adjusting on the contrast and sharpening of the boat house and distant yacht club along with minor cropping so the image was composed correctly.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

Canon 70D, Tokina 11-16mm, Canon EFS 17-55mm, Canon EF 70-300mm L, Canon EF 100mm Macro, ND Filters, Polarised filter, Torch, remote trigger, Canon 500ex flash, Cullman Tripod,

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

The main reason I was able to capture this photograph was due to having a strong idea of what I wanted to achieve, then revisiting the location on many occasions for trial and error techniques/exposures and also assessing weather and water conditions that contribute and influence the overall shot. Patience and persistence to not settle for anything less than what I had pictured in my mind as being the final result.
