1. lisawiza,where did you take this photo?
I took this image in Londons wonderful east end. Victoria park is a beautiful oasis in a busy vibrant area.
2. What time of day?
The image was taken about 4-30 on a foggy winters evening.
3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?
I wanted this image to look mysterious and to draw the viewer into a scene in a story. There was some beautiful light from the lamppost outside the park gates but it needed more. I decided headlights would be a great way of lighting the scene and adding drama as well as making the story even more intriguing.
4. What equipment did you use?
I used the Nikon D7000 with the 105mm lens.
5. What inspired you to take this photo?
I had dreamt about taking an image in the fog. I had wanted to do something really atmospheric. I love old movies where the characters have a vintage look and you see them leaning agains the lamppost surrounded by fog. I wanted to create an image that had a similar feel and also a timeless look. I had some notes scribbled down and a subject ready to go should the opportunity present itself. Lucky for me on this particular day the fog hung around all day and I just had to bide my time and wait for the right light!
6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!
I was very happy with the out of camera image but I used Lightroom to bring out more of the drama and atmosphere. I do enjoy actions but on this image I played a lot with sliders trying to maximise the tones that I wanted to bring out in the image. I added grain but not in an overly obvious way, really I was wanting to bring out that 'film still' look. For me I find that I have an end result in my minds eye and I will play with levels and curves and keep going until I get the desired affect. This image did not take long to process it just needed some love in the form of tweaks!
7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?
In my bag at the moment I have the Nikon D7000 and the Nikon 610. My trusty 50mm 1.4, 35mm and macro 105 oh and my SB900 flash. My bag is missing the 24-70 and the 70-200 but one day!
8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?
If you are like me and usually shoot in natural light then I encourage you to get creative with the light around you. It's not always necessary to have a big complicated light set up. Sometimes instead of asking yourself the question "where is a great venue?" Ask yourself " where have I seen some great light?!" And make it work for you. Once you have your shot composed it's good to Also ask " is there something I can add or take away to give my image more impact? In the case of this image it was the headlights that ended up making it more of what I had envisioned yet the headlights were not in my original plan!
