Here is something we can learn from eparaskeva1 about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.

1. eparaskeva1,where did you take this photo?

In the rainforest in Bali, Indonesia this past July.

2. What time of day?

Late afternoon after shooting the Twin Lakes.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

The light was poor because of all the foliage so the only option was to crank up my ISO.

4. What equipment did you use?

Just the camera with a zoom lens.

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

Bali has two forests inhabited by monkeys but one of the two is too touristy and so it is hard to observe them going about their usual activities in their natural habitat. So we drove a couple of extra hours to get to the rainforest but it paid off. I got quite a few shots of really intense socializing, fighting and playing, but I wanted to really get close and capture a few of them as portraits because they have such expressive and intelligent eyes.

6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!

I sharpened the eyes to give even more emphasis on them.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

Three lenses, various filters for my landscape shots including a CPL, cleaning cloths, extra batteries.

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

Don't start snapping away right away. Try to observe for a while and be still and quiet. Try to get as close as possible but keep safety in mind first as they can get agitated easily. Keep the speed high to capture all the actions which will definitely mean a high ISO because of the foliage element.
