Day or night, Ed is always there ready to assume whatever role is required of him.
As part of a Volunteer Fire Dept we do what needs to be done because we love our community and the people in it. Wearing a pager 24-7, 365 days a year Ed, and my other fellow fire-fighters are all heros.

Location
This photo was taken outside of our firehouse at Rocky Branch Volunteer Fire Dept, outside of Rogers, ArkansasTime
This photo was taken in the morning when we had a full Saturday morning of extrication training. We are occasionally given old vehicles to train with and our volunteers are always keen to improve on their skills and gladly give up a Saturday morning, or even the whole day, if there is a chance of getting some valuable training in.Lighting
The lighting is natural daylight. If I remember correctly, this was one hot Saturday and even in the morning it was pretty bright. I like to just use the natural light to my advantage with outdoor shots.Equipment
This shot was taken with my old Nikon D90, and just a stock Nikon 55-200mm lens. Exif is 1/320, f/5.6, ISO-640, Spot Metering and Aperture Mode. All of my outdoor shots are handheld, and only natural light was used. I try to use natural light as much as possible.Inspiration
Our Firefighters are my inspiration for this shot. As a Volunteer Dept we rely wholly on the desire of our Firefighters to respond to all our calls. There are 14 volunteer FD's in the area where I live and we have an amazing reputation for both response numbers and our expertise. Ed Dawson (subject of photo) has been on the dept just a little while longer than me. He is in his 50's and is a Grandfather. He is also a Veteran, having served in the Marines for several years. He has already served his country way and above so many, and yet he still wants to serve his community now. He responds to virtually every call and is always keen to help where needed. He is my Officer on our Big Engine 912. I am Engineer on this piece of apparatus meaning it is my job to drive and operate it. Ed has my back and makes sure that I have what I need in order to do my job properly.Editing
This image started out its life as a colour image. I like to over process in colour and then convert to black and white. I feel that be doing this I can bring out more character in my images and often greater clarity. I have a passion for black and white as I often feel it is a means of bringing out character that simply cannot be achieved in a colour image. In my camera bag
I carry all of my gear with me for the most part. As well as people I like to shoot wildlife and so I carry with me a variety of lenses to cover both of these interests. You never know where and when you will find a great shot and I like to be prepared. Currently in my gear case I have, Nikon D610 body, Nikon 24mm 1.4, Nikon 50mm 1.4, Nikon 85mm 1.8, Nikon 24-70mm 2.8, Nikon 70-200mm 2.8, Sigma 150-500mm 5-6.3 APOFeedback
The best advice I can give, is to always carry your camera - you never know when a great shot will present itself, and shoot lots. With digital cameras you can shoot, shoot and shoot some more. There is no harm in getting lots of shots - you can always delete what you don't need, but you cannot recapture what you might miss!
