Location
this photo was taken at Fjaðrárgljúfur. a canyon in south east Iceland which is up to 100 m deep and about 2 kilometres long, with the Fjaðrá river flowing through it. It is located near the Ring Road, not far from the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.Time
This photo was taken in January 2013, it was early morning after our first clear night seeing the Aurora Borealis. A few km walk up the path to the head of the canyon and turned to see the glowing light down the canyon, so lucky to be there at the right time as a few hours later a storm front came through.Lighting
the natural lines of the canyon lead the eye to the sunrise of which the glow was amazing and a little surreal, especially in the contrast between where the light was highlighting the land and edge of the canyonEquipment
This was taken on a canon 5d III, EF 16-35mm F2.8L, with a benro flat travel tripod, focal length at 18mm, f16, @ 0.6secInspiration
The scene was magical, with great leading lines & great light. natural landscapes can be so uplifting and inspiring what more inspiration is need to try and capture that moment.Editing
the shot was taken in RAW format, adjustment made to the Colour Temp to warm the scene further, Highlights reduced to gain more sky, and Shadows lightened, then added a little Vibrance and Saturation finishing with an Autumn preset in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I always have my 5D III, EF16-35mm f2.8L, EF 24-105mm f4L, 50mm 1.8 prime, Lee Grad, polariser & big stopper filters, Benro Tripod in my Fstop Mountain series bag.Feedback
Iceland is an amazing place for any photographer at any level at any time of the year, obviously dawn and dusk are our key times, I nearly always use a tripod, make sure you are dressed appropriately and that you are safe, in winter the cold eats at your battery life so keep spares close to you in your trouser pocket to keep warm, also keep your gear acclimatised not in a warm car then out in to the cold, not to much temperature changes. and look all around you for more photo opportunities.
