Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Waialae Beach Park, on the island of Oahu, Hawai'i. It's a special place for us, as this is where my husband and I were married. It's neighborhood is more ritzy, and there's an expensive resort and club right nextdoor, but the beach is usually just full of local residents, fisherman, and kite boarders.

Time

This was early-mid morning. It's our favorite time to go out because the tides are low, and the water is calm for kids. At this time of morning dog walkers fill the beach, and tourists haven't arrived yet. I love the sun, but it is relentless in Hawaii so it's best to get out early, grab lunch, then head home. Safer and more serene.

Lighting

Hawaii weather can be deceptive. We love taking drives to the North Shore, but if we want a quick splash in the water, we stay where we know there is sun. Morning light is just as beautiful as sunsets here.

Equipment

I only have my Google Pixel 4+ on me. Maybe one day I'll get to shoot on big cameras, but for now I love the ability to pull out my phone and capture a moment as I see it.

Inspiration

Nature. That's all the inspiration I need. There's beauty everywhere. That's a total cliche, but it's true. And because of trade winds, the light at the beach is always changing.

Just my phone.

Feedback

Just shoot. If something takes your breath away, capture it, then put your camera away and enjoy it.
