Location
I took this photo at Daytona Beach, Florida, during the late fall when millions of gulls and terns and other shorebirds flock to the pristine beaches for the winter.Time
I took this image in the early afternoon on a clear dayLighting
The sun was behind me, allowing for a good exposure and fast shutter speed to stop the action of the birds and biker.Equipment
I used my Nikon D300 digital camera with my zoom lens set at 78 mm and 1/640 second with ISO at 400.Inspiration
I was bird watching on a very pleasant day, checking out the 1,000s of birds and many different species that were at gathered along the shoreline. When a biker, riding on the beach came by, it afforded me an opportunity to capture the taking off of 100s of birds as he drew near. The massive flock of rising gulls reminded me of a scary scene from the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, The Birds.Editing
Very little post processing was done on this image except for cropping and contrast/saturation adjustments. In my camera bag
I carried only extra data cards and batteries on this excursion to keep it simple as I walked along the beautiful beach.Feedback
For capturing birds at the beach, especially those in flight, I recommend using a fast lens and fast shutter speed to stop the action and avoid motion blur. Also try to chose a day when the light is favorable for capturing the details.
