Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my garden I was sat quietly amongst the buddleia to watch what was going on a for the insects to not feel threatened by my presence tried to move as little as possible l.

Time

This was taken late morning once it had warmed up ensuring my subjects would be around as on a colder day. There is little insect activity from things like butterflies.

Lighting

The lighting is as it was on the day, it was an incredibly bright day very challenging in some directions.

Equipment

Nikon z50 with Nikkor Z MC 50 mm f2.8 I have been trialing for a number of different purposes before deciding to buy one of my own. Zomei Tripod I have a disability so my tripod is really important to me as I struggle to hold my camera for long.

Inspiration

As I was set up in my location waiting for subjects into my working area along came what I now know to be a pellucid fly into my working area and it looked so unusual and not knowing what it is I wanted to get a photograph so I could find out about this funky looking fly. I use the picture this app for identifying plants and trees and picture insect app from the same developer for identifying insects. I think it’s incredibly important to have knowledge about what is in the area you are working in - Especially in the countryside or national parks. You don’t want to be accidentally bringing spreading invasive species seeds if you are working close to them and then move to a new location. Or even take them home.

Editing

I wanted the flys wings to be really emphasised so I did sharpen the image up a fraction.

In my camera bag

I have the two lenses that came with my camera the 16-50 mm and 50-250mm And a 24-70mm that I picked up second hand. I have a few plant clips so I can clip and rogue branches that might be spoiling a capture but washing them every time they’ve been used to prevent any cross contamination of locations. A spare battery, I use mirrorless system and it’s one of the downfalls, the battery capacity particularly as with a brain injury it can take me a bit longer to get what I had a vision of

Feedback

Don’t be in a rush. Insects of all sorts will come to you if you sit quietly and they don’t see you as a threat.
