I took this photo in 2019. I found these vintage clowns on ebay and thought they had so much character. I set them up with a chessboard on my dining room table and had some fun bringing them to life. I have recently decided that I would like to do a series of shots starring these comical characters.Time
I set these shots up late in the evening when i was going to get some peace. It was about 10pm and my wife and kids had gone to bed. I didn't have to work the next day so i took my time. And stayed up until about 2am editing.Lighting
I am an amateur and had never attempted still life before. My set up was sparce. I used a single torch with variable settings which i held by hand. I set my camera on a timer and I kept experimenting until i achieved the look i was after. The lighting ended up being quite harsh so i thought it was best to edit in black and white.Equipment
This was shot with a Fujifilm X-T2 and 52mm lens at f2.5, 1/3 sec. I had the camera set up on a tripod and the torch was hand held. I would love to re-visit this project and improve it.Inspiration
These clowns, I love them! I have a million ideas of how i can use these little creatures for future photos.Editing
I edited with Adobe Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro which i was using for all my street photography at the time. It's a fantastic program for getting quick effects. I honestly can't remember the exact process i took but I remember how much fun I had playing within that program. In my camera bag
I keep it simple when i go out. I take my Fujifilm, and my 35mm f2 and 56mm f1.2 (I need to add a wider prime). If i plan on doing some landscape I'll take a tripod. Occasionally I will take out my Kodak Box Brownie or Kershaw, Penguin for some medium format film fun.Feedback
Well, I didn't know what I was doing at the time. I had a vision in my mind and fumbled around with minimal equipment until I got some results. It's amazing how quickly you learn when you're having fun. That would be my advice: do what you love, don't be discouraged by anyone and keep learning from those who are doing what you want to do.
