Behind The Lens

Location

This Great Blue Heron was fishing in San Francisco's Sutro Baths at the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, California.

Time

This was late in the day less, than an hour before sunset.

Lighting

The sun was low on the western horizon and fortunately the Blue Heron was facing west, towards the light.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D5500 with a Tamron 18-400 mm zoom at 300 mm.

Inspiration

I love the color and beauty of the Blue Herons feathers.

Editing

I used Topaz AI Clear to reduce the noise due to the high ISO that was necessary for this image.

In my camera bag

I keep a circular polarize and variable neutral density filter.

Feedback

Photographing Great Blue Herons requires exceptional patience as they can remain motionless for long periods of time while fishing but then pull a fish out of the water in the blink of an eye. Carry a small stool and make yourself comfortable while waiting for the action!
