Behind The Lens

Location

After months of not being able to see my in-laws, we recovered from COVID back in late October and then took two consecutive negative COVID tests, quarantined, and visited them at their home in Oconto County, Wisconsin. This photo was taken in my father-in-law's kitchen.

Time

Taken late evening, after all ambient sunlight disappeared.

Lighting

I've been playing with low-key lighting. While the potential with multiple lights is great, I love the appearance of a single muted light about 18" higher than the subject's nose.

Equipment

Nikon D750 with my 24-120 kit lens set to approx. 85mm. Tripod used. Exposure histogram stacked hard to the left and shot raw with a black cloth backdrop.

Inspiration

My father-in-law is a fit and healthy 90-year-old and, with few other places to go during the pandemic, staying in and being my photography muse was a delight for both of us. Any folks that make it that long have faces that tell stories all on their own.

Editing

Yes, I did, but remarkably little. I boosted highlights and exposure mainly and brought the shadows and blacks down enough to obscure and light parts that appeared on the backdrop. Small nudges of texture and sharpness to bring out the details. Mostly, one press of 'Auto' in Lightroom did the magic and only left me tiny details to play with after that.

In my camera bag

Two Nikon DSLR's: a D750 and a D7200. While I have multiple lenses, I like the D750 with the 24-120 kit and the D7200 with a Sigma 10-20. With these two, I'm ready to capture many fine images.

Feedback

Shine the light to the front of your subject to reduce the amount of light on the backdrop.
