Location
I have taken this photo on my local beach, Burns Beach which is a popular location for photographers. Burns Beach is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located 34 kilometers north of Perth's central business district. There are so many elements to this location that photography here is guaranteed to be jaw-dropping.Time
When there are clouds around in the evenings, I normally make my way down to the beach with camera in hand to look for something interesting to shoot. This beach is constantly changing as a result of the seasons, tides, storms etc. and not one shoot is ever the same.Lighting
This photo was taken one late afternoon in January 2021 when there were some raging bush-fires in and around the Northern suburbs of Perth. The fire devastated a number of houses in the area which is very sad, but at the same time the smoke from these bush fires creates fantastic opportunities for us as photographers when the smoke filled the skies. On this particular day, I remember the smoke clouds resulting in and some interesting soft yellow and grey light which caused for a very unique and dramatic sun-set.Equipment
The equipment used for this shot: - Camera: Canon 6 D - Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM - Tripod: Manfrotto with ball-head - Filter: NISI 3 stop neutral density Camera settings were: - F14 - Shutter speed: 2/5 seconds - ISO 50 - Focal length: 24mmInspiration
Burns Beach has a long beach that starts with a rocky headland which is facing West, perfect for spectacular sun-sets. Also because the beach is constantly changing and this combined with the smokey skies at sun-set, I was excited to grab this golden photography opportunity.Editing
I normally shoot in RAW format and therefor use Adobe Lightroom to process my photographs. On this particular photograph, not a lot of work was required. I remember bumping up the whites a little in order to emphasize the details in the water. In my camera bag
Because I am living close to the beach, I normally don't carry too much in my bag when at this location. On this particular day, I carried my camera body, lens, filter kit, tripod, remote trigger and a dry cloth. When visiting other locations. I would pack extra gear such as an extra camera body, spare batteries, additional lenses and yes, my drone as well.Feedback
My advise to others is - go out and shoot as often as you can, even if it is at the same location. Hone your skills and know your equipment. You don't need the most expensive camera and gear in order to get good shots. In my opinion, it is more important that you understand and know how to use the equipment you have. Study your camera manual, then read it again, and again and when you think you know it all - read through it one more time.
