Location
This photo was created in my studio in Windsor, Ontario with local model Lizzy Grandmaison.Time
We shot this in the afternoon but it could be done at any time of day in the studio.Lighting
I used a 3-light setup to light Lizzy. I placed two 4-foot stripboxes on each side behind Lizzy and used a 22" white beauty dish as key light.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark IV supported by a Gitzo tripod. I use Alien Bees by Paul C. Buff in the studio and used three Alien Bees B800 units to light the shot.Inspiration
Lizzy wanted to do something fun but and I had the costume so we decided to use it for the shoot.Editing
I cleaned Lizzy's skin up a bit using standard retouching techniques in Photoshop. I also added a textured background for interest. In my camera bag
I typically carry enough lenses (4 in particular) to cover the focal lengths from 17-200mm. I also in recent years recently purchased the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART which I love and use more and more each time I do a portrait session or a model test.Feedback
Know your lighting and know how to light in ratios. It is becoming a lost art with TTL flash units gaining in popularity. However, if you want to create consistent work, having a good set of lighting skills can really help in a pinch, when either mother nature isn't giving you what you want or you want to create something like this image in the studio, from scratch. -- Practice, practice, practice!
