Location

I took this photo on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina at a popular beach for sunsets.

Time

This was taken around 6:15 just before the sun went down. I had taken several photos of the boat as it sailed around and liked this one where it had moved in closer to shore.

Lighting

As you can see, the lighting is confined to one small area - I wasn't even sure there would be a sunset, since it had been cloudy all day, but a hole opened in the clouds and provided me with about 20 minutes of beautiful golden light.

Equipment

Because I have some tendon issues in my hands, I have converted from Nikon equipment to the Olympus 4/3 system. With the smaller, lighter cameras and lenses, I can hand-hold most shots I used to have to use a tripod for. I have two Olympus cameras - I used the EM1 ll with a 40-150mm lens for this shot.

Inspiration

My wife and I have been to Ocracoke many times, but one of the subjects I was missing, was a good sunset photo. This is one of several particularly good photos I took away from this trip.

Editing

I run all my raw photos through Lightroom. Because of the large expanse of gray sky, the image has been cropped quite a bit so that the viewers eye sees the main subjects - sailboat and sunset, somewhat larger than in the original photo. I also cranked the highlights down all the way to turn the sun into a ball of light. A little contrast and vibrance and that was it.

In my camera bag

I use an Olympus E-M1 ll and as a back-up an E-M1. I use various 4/3 Olympus Pro lenses ranging from macro to wide angle to telephoto.

Feedback

There are various apps for showing where and what time the sun sets according to your location. After determining where you can take that photo, scout out the location during the day to get an idea of how you want to compose your shot and then arrive well before the sun goes down so you can have time to set up your equipment and compose your shot.
