Location
This photo was taken at the Lake Audubon Wildlife Refuge in North Dakota. This is one of my favorite spots for sunsets and where I go for my yearly pheasant hunting trip. I took off on this particular journey with a picture in mind and ended up getting more than one shot that has been very successful for me.Time
I went out to take a series of photos as mentioned earlier and I believe it was one of my most successful adventures I have had. This was taken just at sunset and I wandered all along the shoreline of this particular part of the lake to get exactly what I was looking for. The water is tucked down in a coulee so it is always sheltered from the wind and each sunset produces very nice reflections off of the water. I simply cant stop going back there every chance I get.Lighting
For anyone who has never traveled to North Dakota I can truly say the sunsets are some of the finest in the world. As a retired Marine who has traveled all over the place and of course with my camera at my side I can truly say the lighting from the sunsets in North Dakota provides a whole new world each and every evening.Equipment
For this photo I used my Canon 5D MKII with a Tamaron SP 15-30 mm wide angle lens set at 15mm. F/20 at 1/25 sec on a tripod.Inspiration
As mentioned above, I had a purpose for this particular photo journey and that was to get a special picture for my mom who was dying of cancer. She was an avid photographer as well and bought me my first camera when I was very young. I wanted her to have a special photograph taken especially for her before she left. Unfortunately I got the call just a couple days later that she was in the hospital and was not going to make it. She never had a chance to see this photo in person but deep down I know it warms her heart. As soon as I can I am having large prints made for my 2 sisters and my brother. Just because.Editing
I did do some post-processing on this shot. I am not a photoshop expert but I know enough to make some minor changes. I wanted to enhance the reeds on the shoreline just a bit so they would stand out and not be so much of a silhouette. I honestly don't remember what all I did but once I had it I felt it turned out pretty darn good.In my camera bag
At all times, I have my Canon 5D MKII which my mom bought for me after my return from Afghanistan in 2010. I have my Canon 70-200 mm, Tamron 15-30mm, Tamron 90 mm macro, Canon 50mm, and my tripod. I always have lens cleaning equipment since I am always outdoors and I try to have extra batteries and memory cards. So many times I get out there only to find out my battery is dead or I forgot my memory card at home.Feedback
The only advice I can give anyone is to simply get out there and have fun. Find the spots you enjoy going to, get away from all the people and just let it all soak in. Also, don't forget to turn around and see what you have missed along your trek. Its a whole different view when you stop, pause, and look back at where you came from.
