The witch tower was built around 1470 with the city wall as a north-western corner tower. It was a prison tower. In the lower part of the building there is an approx. 5 meter deep dungeon which was only accessible through a so-called "fear hole" in the dungeon ceiling. The detainee was let down on a rope through this fear hole and had to wait for his fate there with bread and water. The tower was not always called "Witch Tower". It only got this name when it became known that people accused of witchcraft were also imprisoned in this tower from 1655 to 1656. In earlier times the tower was called "Way Tower at the Rear Gate" .
