As my brother Martin and I arrived at Haifoss very early in the morning we were seriously surprised by the high winds both on the top of the cliffs and in the valley itself. Even though the sun slowly appeared above us it never became warm at the bottom. It's possible to walk even deeper into the valley where you will find a second waterfall. On the path you will see enormous blocks of ice that have fallen into the valley from high above (some of the ice is seen as a white triangle in the background). Passing the first waterfall required a raincoat (which we didn't bring!) due to the winds blowing mist all around the fall and up into the air. It was a truly amazing place and a place I would like to return to some day. Awareness and attention to the dangers of wandering around in this valley is necessary though and I would not walk down there alone. My brother and I had a 'fruitful' discussion about exactly how many days you could lay right there in the bottom of the valley under a big chunk of ice, before some unfortunate hiker would find you...well we also took some photos!..:O)...

Thank you Tyson. Iceland is a dramatic place in itself with a nature I cannot get enough of. It took me a while but I finally have come to the conclusion to use my money on travels and courses and not just gear. Iceland is for sure a place I can recommend.

Thanks Jayne, I would wish that I could travel to Iceland every year, but as I can't I enjoy occasionally looking at the 'old' photos and remember the circumstances around taking them. For this photo it was the high winds at the top of the waterfalls that made me and my brother walk down into the canyon, which I don't regret doing, besides the very tough walk back up again, with all the camera gear, heavy tripod and a drone😀😀

Hi Joe. Haifoss is really a bucket list for me to return to one day and even though I might not get a similar shot, the feel and sight of the place is amazing and in a good way a humbling experience.

Location
The photo is taken in the Haifoss Valley, near the Hekla volcano in the south of Iceland. The waterfall has a drop of 122m into the valley. From the parking lot it will be a 1/2-hour hike to the bottom of the valley and if you would like to visit the location just be sure to hold on to or lean a bit into the side of the cliffs going down. Its fairly safe but company is recommended.Time
My brother and I arrived at the valley around a quarter to five in the morning in order to catch the sunrise over the waterfalls (the Granni waterfall is hidden in the valley behind the water spray from Haifoss). The photo is taken 05:27 July 6, 2020.Lighting
It was quite dark in parts of the valley and the sun was only slowly starting to shine and shed a little light into the scene. In recent years I favour a shorter shutter speed when capturing waterfalls and rivers. This was not possible this morning and as I wanted a small aperture, I had no other options than the long exposure. Still some good texture in the water. settings: Aperture f/22?ISO 100?Shutter 1/20?Focal Length 180/10?Equipment
I used my Sony A7R4 for this photo together with the F2.8 16-35mm GM lens. Had to use a tripod and a filter as well due to the long exposure.Inspiration
I had seen several great captures from the Haifoss valley and all of them from the top of the valley looking over at the Haifoss and Granni waterfalls. Different viewpoints and weather conditions of course but still almost identical. This morning it was extremely windy, and we couldn't get a decent shot at the top. I then found out that it was possible to get into the valley and as my brother and I made our way down and got closer to the waterfall I saw these large boulders in the side of the river. It was a little climb down between the boulders and one foot in the water to get into the right angle for what I wanted but the scenery appearing was all worth the effort.Editing
I worked intensely on this photo to get it right (as I saw the scene) and due to the dark valley, the sky was blown out to some degree. This was the trickiest part to process besides the colour management. I still to this day find the colour management the hardest among all the things a photographer must master. In my camera bag
I have recently bought the Sony A1 camera (no, it really hasn't improved my photography.... travelling to locations I find inspiring and photography courses have... and will in the future). Besides that,...I usually have my 200-600mm and 24-105mm lenses with me. For the Wide lenses: the 12-24mm and the 16-35mm lens. My magnetic ND filters are from KASE in Germany. As always with filters...don't drop them. but I can truly recommend the system.Feedback
Do something new when you come to a location. Earlier, which is about the time this Photo is taken, I was very hard to move out of a spot when I had started to set up the tripod. Endless and similar shots of the same scenery with constant changes in my camera settings. Now I want to walk around more and maybe not leave the camera in the car, but at least let it hang by my side when scouting for new compositions and angles in a location. Sometimes its a question of moving the camera ever so slightly and you will suddenly discover what may make the capture more unique.
