Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken indoors on a rainy day. There was a squirrel outside and My dogs were infatuated by it as usual. The question was "what is it" which usually generates this response from Anna I titled the image "What"

Time

The time of day was morning and it was cloudy and raining providing a dissipated light which I enjoy the richness of.

Lighting

Natural lighting was provided through the picture windows on a rainy morning. Had this been afternoon the lighting would have been much different as these windows face east. Because of the cloudiness the light was dissipated or diffused and less harsh then direct sunlight.

Equipment

I normally shoot with a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 24-120 1.4 but that was just out of reach at this photo opportunity so I grabbed my Google Pixel from my shirt pocket for this shot and it proved to be worthy, although it is not easy for me to admit that.

Inspiration

These two dogs, mother and daughter are quite the pair. Like many dogs they provide such companionship. I have been photographing dogs and cats for years as well as wildlife and find all animals to be great subjects for photography. This particular shot recognizes me and the viewer as real as Anna stares into the lens verifying my existence. There is personality in all animals and with patience and practice a photographer can capture it.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and use post processing in lightroom, Photoshop, NIk collection DxO and elements (even when the image starts in my Google Pixel) to bring out the character I am looking for in each shot.

In my camera bag

My equipment is extensive and includes multiple lenses from wide angle to telephoto and many zoom lenses in between. I also use filters, speed lights and synchronizers, remote wireless releases and tripods. Each has a specific use and I need them all for the different types of images I capture.

Feedback

Learn every aspect of your equipment and practice until you can comfortably and effortlessly use your equipment properly. Cary your camera with you every opportunity you have. Capture images every day if you can. Learn to anticipate the possibility of the shot and be ready for it when the time comes. Think in terms of and strive for quality recognizing that along the journey quantity will be a means to the end result. Explore your shots in post processing for that which you might have missed when in the moment of the capture.
