Photographing the grebe on a sunny day, with the blue sky overhead and the sun directly behind me the back of the grebe took on a distinctive bluish glow. Rather than being a form of feather iridescence I suspect the blue sky overhead had more to do with it. The same bird however seen from the side moments later was lacking the bluish color indicating that the alignment of the feathers also played role in its visibility. Note bits of blue sky reflecting off a few of the waves. The water itself was not green. Its color stems from the reflection of some conifers in the background.
