She came with Lafayette in America to help the citizens On May 4, 1781, the frigate received the young American Congress on board. On July 21, 1781, she participated in the naval battle of Louisbourg: alongside the frigate l'Astrée commanded by Jean-François de La Pérouse, the two French ships victoriously fought six English ships. This confrontation was painted by Auguste-Louis de Rossel.

In September 1781, the Hermione joined de Grasse's fleet after its victory at the Battle of Chesapeake Bay. She attended the decisive battle of Yorktown which ended on October 19 with the surrender of the English troops of Lord Cornwallis against the American insurgents led by Washington and their French allies led by Rochambeau. The war then switches in favor of the insurgents. After the capitulation of Yorktown, the Count of Grasse left him at Chesapeake with the command of Jacques-Aimé Le Saige knight of La Villèsbrunne the Romulus, the Hermione and the Diligente2,3.

On February 2, 1782, the Hermione left the American coast to return to France. The frigate anchors in the harbor of the island of Aix on February 25.
