Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph of Royal Clipper was taken off the coast of St. Kitts January 1, 2020.

Time

I don't know the exact time of day but it was obviously sunset, the sun was already quite low in the sky.

Lighting

I was on the shady side of the ship hoping the sun would illuminate the sails while maintaining enough detail in the shadows. This is all natural lighting. I do have images from the sunlit side, but this on is more dramatic, I believe.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark III with a 28-300 Tamron lens. It was in aperture priority, ISO 200, F 13. This was taken in the ship's tender boat as both vessels were moving. The camera was hand held at 1/80 second, at 65mm. .

Inspiration

Each time we have taken a vacation aboard a Star Clippers ship ( 9 times), one of the activities, weather permitting , is a photo tender. There have been only a few times that the sun was this low. The sky had multiple colors, and since most of my images tend to be vertical, I liked the height of the sails to fill the less dramatic part of the sky. The tender sits much lower than the ship which emphasizes the 197 ft. tall masts.

Editing

I did some post processing in Luminar 4. I probably opened up some shadow in the ship, added a bit of saturation, and maybe brought out some detail. I used Photoshop to add my name. It is the best way I know how to do that.

In my camera bag

The older I get, the less I carry for vacation. I sometimes take a second body, a Cannon 7D and it's 16-300 lens because it has a built-in flash the the 5 D does not. I pack a cable release and extra SD and CF cards and of course my iPhone. On my most recent trip to my reunion, I took my Olympus 14 megapixel point and shoot camera and my iPhone.

Feedback

There is only one way to get a close-up shot of a moving tall ship and that is from another moving vessel. The vacation aboard the Royal Clipper is great fun and if you like sailing, go for it! There are other amazing photo opportunities from the rigging, crew at work, and the crows nest. I have many images of all those things.
