Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken in the middle of the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland Oregon. I had to run into the middle of bridge when there was a break in traffic to set up.

Time

I got this shot a round 4:30 pm. At the beginning of rush hour in Portland Oregon. In January the sun sets around 4:00 pm I wanted to take advantage of the blue hour.

Lighting

I had wanted to get this shot for months but I had to wait until it was winter in Portland so it would be dark and rainy during rush hour.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony A7Rii with the Rokinon 14mm at f8. on a tripod with a 15 second exposure.

Inspiration

I love shooting at night and at the time was inspired by the up coming winter lights festival. So I took the time to wander around Portland at night looking for a unique composition. This idea came to me by accident I was walking across the hawthorn bridge when and decided to cross it so to get out of the way of a rickshaw.

Editing

I didn't do a lot of post processing with this shot. All I did was crop the image, bring up the vibrance and saturation to enhance the blues and reds. and remove some littler from the street.

In my camera bag

The three things I always have in my bag are, my Sony A7rii, Sony 85mm f1.8 and my Sony 50mm F1.8. I prefer to shoot with primes because they make me move. I find That when I have my 24-70 or something similar I don't move around the location as much and miss shots as a result. That being said I usually have my 24-70 G master and 70-200 F4 Sony lenses. unless I am shooting architecture in witch case i bring my 16-35 F4 zisse and Rokinon 14mm F2.8

Feedback

The best advice I can give for getting a shot like this is to take your time and go back. It took me going back on 4 separate occasions to get this shot. My first attempt was in November and it was just to dark to get the shot. my second attempt it didn't rain after raining every other day that week. The third attempt it was raining so much that my tripod was getting splashed by the cars driving by. so just be patient and persistent and if you going to stand in traffic like me be sure to wear something reflective.
