Behind The Lens

Location

It was a typical rainy summers day in the Kalahari in South Africa. I took the photo at our farmhouse.

Time

The photograph was taken mid morning when a shower of rain passed over the area. The Kalahari is a very arid part of South Africa known for it's extreme heat. During summertime we have good bouts of rain and thunderstorms. This one was a particularly good one. Being in the middle of summer my daughter couldn't resist playing in the showers with her umbrella and semi winter gear. Great fun for the kids from here.

Lighting

Normally the light during this time of the day is extremely harsh, but due to the cloudy weather the light was beautifully diffused which helped to add a natural glow to the photo.

Equipment

Nikon D7000 with the Nikon 18 - 105mm VR

Inspiration

I just had to take this photograph of her being silly in the rain. Kitted in a warm jacket and woolly hat. It was mid summer and what gave it away was her bare feet and legs. Playing in a bucket of water with the umbrella over her shoulder just added the touch of childhood glee of splashing in the rare occasional rain.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop to post-process images. In this image a bit of exposure and contrast was adjusted together with a bit of sharpness.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000, Nikon 18- 105mm VR, Nikon 50mm f1.8 and Nikon SB700 flash.

Feedback

My advise would be to just observe the kids having leaps and loads of fun. Ignore all the technical jargon and just enjoy it with them and capture them quietly. Leave them to be free and that's when you will capture them being their own selves. Happy, boisterous and free. These make for the best child photography photos.
