Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my studio in my basement as a quick last minute photo. Julia is a good friends daughter that needed to submit a senior picture for the yearbook, and we only had a two days.

Time

She came y around 5 pm to get her portrait done.

Lighting

The lighting was pretty standard lighting for a portraits, a large soft box for the main light, an umbrella for the fill and a light on the background.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7200 with Nikon 24-140mm lens and Alien Bees lights from Paul C Buff.

Inspiration

The inspiration was really that I have known Julia her whole life, and while we needed to get this photo done quickly for her, she was so photogenic and had such a wonderful smile. Being in a fairly small town, I love getting the opportunity to photograph the kids of this town throughout their lives and getting to see them grow into young adults.

Editing

I use Lightroom for my post production work. I usually do not do much tweaking, as I like photos to look as much as they did through the camera. I learned photography on film, so I may be a bit old school in that your photo should be as close to perfect when you take the photo, as opposed to taking the photo and "fixing" it afterwards.

Feedback

Being that this was a pretty simple portrait in the studio, just get the lighting right and take the time to work with the subject. If the lighting is right and you have a good set up, it's all about getting that smile, that look, that perfect shot.
