Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken a while ago in Nijmegen on the upper gallery of the Marikenstraat. (The Netherlands).

Time

I took the photo on 12th November, late in the afternoon around 16.00h.

Lighting

At that time of the year, the sun is very low, but still strong (no clouds). It was just sunlight that lit up the street. Besides that, the sunlight was strongly reflected by the stone street tiles.

Equipment

This shot was taken freehand (without a tripod) and without a flash. The photo was taken without a filter with a Canon 700D (ISO 100, 1/160 and f 5.6).

Inspiration

We were on a weekend with friends and we just wanted to wander around in the city. When we came on the lower part of this street I noticed the long shadows that were projected by the low sun. I quickly looked for a passage to the top gallery. On a small bridge I stood and watched people passing by and I started taking pictures. The sun was so low that the shadows were super long.

Editing

Because the sunlight was so strong, I first off all had to do some basic (Lightroom) processing (highlights, shadows, blacks, whites and contrast). I added some clarity and looked at black and white clipping. Then I converted to B&W and went over to photoshop to get rid of some annoying things like garbage, metal cans, paper, ... Finally I did some burning and dodging.

In my camera bag

My equipment is very limited. The lens I took the photo with is a canon 18-135mm kit lens. Besides that, I always have my Canon 10-18mm 1:4.5-5.6 zoom with me. And sometimes I take my Godox V860IIc flash with me.

Feedback

As this photo is an example of street photograpy, I advise to always have your camera with you (no matter what your girlfriend of wife thinks of you) and to look ahead and behind you while wandering through streets. Sometimes the most beautiful scenes happen behind you. Try to capture every day life and society in real situations. But above all, have fun and enjoy getting out with your camera.
